Yorkshire moved to within touching distance of retaining the British Inter-Counties Championship Premier Division title after thrashing Cambridgeshire 25-11 this weekend.
The defending champions went into the penultimate weekend of the season with a healthy 30-point lead at the top of the table, and they stretched their advantage over second place Lancashire to 33 points with this comfortable win.
Yorkshire captain Brian Dawson takes his side to nearest title rivals Lancashire on the final weekend of the season in three weeks’ time knowing they only need to win a handful of games to clinch the trophy.
Elsewhere this weekend, Lancashire kept their faint title hopes alive with a 22-14 victory away at Nottinghamshire.
Nottinghamshire, who went into the weekend in sixth place, dropped two places to eighth in the table and are now just one place above the bottom two going into the final weekend on April 22-23.
Warwickshire climbed up to third in the table with a hard fought 19-17 win away at bottom side Essex, who are now 17 points adrift of safety with one game to go.
Lincolnshire put themselves in contention for a top three finish after winning a tight contest 19-17 at Cheshire left them just three points behind third place Warwickshire.
Devon moved up one place to seventh in the table and eased their relegation fears with a 20-16 victory at home to fellow strugglers Glamorgan.
Second bottom Glamorgan, who went into this weekend three points adrift of safety, saw the gap between themselves and eight spot, now occupied by Nottinghamshire, rise to nine points.
