New Zealand’s Bernie Smith was crowned Canterbury Open champion for the second time this past weekend.
Smith, who won the title back in 2012, and lost in the final 12 months ago, defeated his fellow countryman Craig Caldwell 6-3 in the final, held in Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday.
It is the third BDO ranking title success of Smith’s career, with his other tournament victory coming in the New Zealand Masters nine years ago.
Greg Moss is currently the highest ranked New Zealand player in the BDO men’s rolling rankings, in 52nd, with Mark McGrath (58th), Mark Cleaver (71st), Caldwell (77th), Cody Harris (83rd), Peter Hunt (91st) and Mike Day (97th) also inside the top 100.
In the ladies event, Jane Harrington clinched the title with a 5-1 victory against Desi Mercer in the final.
