Peter Wright has confirmed he will be returning to represent Scotland in the Betway World Cup of Darts next month.
The world number three, who has won seven titles this year on the PDC circuit, including the Coral UK Open in March, made himself unavailable for selection for the tournament last year.
But speaking in an exclusive interview with Love The Darts this afternoon, as part of a media day ahead of the Betway Premier League play-offs tomorrow, Wright revealed he will be representing Scotland in Frankfurt early next month.
“I’ll be in the World Cup,” the Scottish-born thrower said. “I just had a little break (last year) to have some time with my family and everything.
“Obviously we don’t have a lot of time at home, so we wanted to do that.”
Wright has been part of the Scotland team on three occasions before, partnering Gary Anderson twice in 2012 and 2015, as well as Robert Thornton in-between in 2014.
The last of those appearances, in 2015, saw Wright and Anderson go all the way to the final, where they were beaten 3-2 in a decider by England.
With Wright and Anderson, the world number two, teaming up again, “Snakebite” agrees they will be one of the favourites to lift the title and become the first nation other than England and the Netherlands to win the tournament.
“Yeah I would say so,” Wright said. “We’re probably the number one seeds as well.
“Obviously Gary’s on form and I’m on form as well. All you’ve got to do is click on that weekend and hopefully it will win us the title.”
All the players representing each of the 32 teams will be confirmed on Monday following this weekend’s Players Championship double-header, but Anderson and Wright are guaranteed to be the two highest ranked Scotsmen in the PDC Order of Merit, making them favourites to be selected for the World Cup.
